Roma Reader

Nadja Vasile: Roma Reader

I was born in the Rhodope borderlands, on the Bulgarian side, where the mountain villages sit close enough to Greece that the dialects blur and the old women still burn herbs they have no word for in any language the schools would recognise. I read from that place. I still do.

The Rhodope Borderlands

The Rhodopes are not the mountains people picture when they think of mountains. They are old in the way that wears things down rather than building them up, low ridges, dense beech forest, villages that smell of damp stone and woodsmoke even in summer. The Bulgarian-Greek border runs through that landscape the way a scar runs through skin: technically healed, still felt. I grew up on the Bulgarian side, in a settlement that does not appear on most maps, among people who had been in that particular valley for generations beyond counting.

What that landscape does to you is this: it removes the idea that the world is arranged for your benefit. The winters are long. The soil is thin in places. The state, whichever state it happened to be that decade, was always something that happened to you from outside. You learn to read what is actually in front of you rather than what you were promised. That is not pessimism. It is a specific kind of clarity. It is the only kind of clarity that is any use to anyone.

I moved to Muntenia, southern Romania, the flat country, river country, in my thirties. I have been here twenty years. The landscape is the opposite of the Rhodopes: open, exposed, sky that goes on past where your eyes stop working. Both places have taught me something about reading. The mountains taught me to look at what is hidden in the near distance. The plain taught me to look at what is right in front of you, out in the open, that people somehow keep not seeing.

The Drabardi Tradition

A drabardi is a Roma woman who reads, who sees, who interprets, who speaks what she finds. The word comes from drab, which in Romani carries meanings that run across herb, medicine, poison, and the kind of knowledge that can do either. The drabardi is not a performer. She is not a spiritual guide in the Western therapeutic sense. She is someone who has been trained, over years and through direct transmission from women who were themselves trained, to perceive what is present in a situation and to say it plainly.

In the Baică healer lineage I come from, which runs through the women on my mother's side, the knowledge passes orally. There are no texts. There are no certification courses. There is a woman who has done this for forty years sitting with a woman who is learning, and the learning happens through doing and through correction, over a very long time. The descântece, the spoken-word charms, the voiced formulas that accompany a reading or a working, are memorised, not written down. They change slightly with each woman who holds them. They are meant to.

This is different from Western tarot as it is currently practised in ways that matter. Western tarot is a learned system, largely textual in origin, with a stable iconography that was formalised in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It can be learned from books. Many people learn it well from books. That is a different thing from what I do. I use cards as one tool among several. The reading is not the cards. The reading is the perception that moves through them. The chovihani tradition, the Roma women who held the deeper workings, the healings and the bindings and the readings of the dead, did not wait for a system. The system was incidental. The perception was the point.

Twenty Years of Practice

Twenty years means you have sat with people in the worst moments of their lives more times than you can count. It means you have been wrong, and you have learned from being wrong, and you have been right in ways that you could not have anticipated and that sometimes frightened you. It means you no longer need to perform certainty because certainty has become ordinary. It also means you know the difference between what you can see clearly and what is obscured, and you say so. Not everything is readable. Not every question has an answer I can reach. Twenty years teaches you that too.

What it does not mean is that I have assembled a list of credentials or accumulated a following or built something I want you to be impressed by. I do this work because I was trained to do it and because it is useful. The usefulness is the point.

What Roma Reading Is Not

It is not the Hollywood version. Not the wagon, not the crystal ball, not the theatrical accent, not the curse that only I can lift for a further payment. That version of us was invented by people who were not us, and it has done damage I do not have the patience to calculate. I am not that.

It is not Western Wicca or neo-pagan practice. Those traditions have their own history and their own integrity, but they are not Roma tradition. They are not what I do. The conflation is common and it is wrong.

It is not what you find on the mass psychic platforms, the ones with hundreds of readers available immediately, rated by stars, with introductory minutes and money-back guarantees. I am not available immediately. I deliver by email in three to five days because that is the time the work requires. If you need instant reassurance, those platforms exist and you can use them. I am not competing with them.

It is not a performance designed to make you feel held and seen and validated. I will tell you what I see. Some of what I see will be useful to you. Some of it will be uncomfortable. I do not adjust the reading to manage your feelings. You are an adult. I will treat you as one.

Work With Nadja

I offer three ways to work together. All are delivered by email. All take three to five days from the time I accept your request. I do not offer same-day readings. The work does not happen on that schedule.

Tarot Reading: €6
A full reading on your situation. You give me context. I read and write what I find. This is the most complete picture I can offer in a single session.

One Burning Question: €6
One question, precisely put. I focus the reading there and nowhere else. Useful when you know exactly what you need to understand.

Medium Session: €22
Contact with someone who has died. I cannot guarantee connection, no one can, and anyone who tells you otherwise is lying to you, but I can attempt it and report honestly on what I find. This takes the longest and requires the most from me.
