Where the Cards Come From: and Where the Knowledge Does
Tarot as a printed deck arrived in Europe in the fifteenth century, in the courts of northern Italy. Playing cards before that, older still. What most people do not know, or do not say, is that Romani people were among the earliest and most consistent carriers of cartomancy across Europe. Not because we invented the cards. Because we were always moving, always observing, always working at the edges of settled society where people come when official channels have failed them. We became the readers because we were present at the margins, and the margins are where the real questions live.
My grandmother's grandmother was a băică, a folk healer. The word does not translate cleanly. It means something between a wise woman, a midwife of difficult situations, and a person who knows what the body and the spirit are doing when they pull against each other. Her work was not cards. It was descântece: spoken-word charms, specific to the problem, memorised over years, modified by the practitioner's own reading of the person in front of her. The words were not magic in the way cinema means magic. They were structured attention. A way of narrowing the practitioner's sight onto one problem until you could see all the way through it.
I learned tarot on top of that foundation. The cards are a tool. The foundation is what determines whether the tool produces anything worth hearing.
What "Tradition" Actually Means in This Context
Much costume online around this work. Scarves, mystery, everything called ancient. None tells you how somebody reads. I want you to know what I offer, how I work.
What I carry is not theatrical. It is more like a set of habits of attention that were trained into me early and that I have continued to develop over twenty years of practice. When I look at a spread, I am not just reading the assigned meaning of each card from a book I studied. I am reading the spread as a whole field, the relationships between cards, the weights and silences, what is present and what is absent. I am also reading the person, insofar as they have communicated with me. And I am drawing on a way of seeing that was not invented by a course or a certification, because it was not invented at all. It accumulated, over generations, through use.
That is not mysticism. It is the same principle that makes a carpenter who learned from their parent read a piece of wood differently than someone who watched YouTube tutorials. The knowledge has more layers when it has been lived across time.
The Specific Difference You Will Notice in a Reading

The descântece tradition I come from is entirely specific. A charm for a sick child is not the same as a charm for a woman in a bad marriage, even if both involve, say, grief. You narrow the sight. I am thinking about the particular shape of the wound that kind of dispute makes, the way it sits in the body, the places it tends to move next. After twenty years, those patterns are in my hands as much as in my mind.
The other difference is that I do not soften. This comes from the băică lineage more than anywhere else. A healer who tells you what you want to hear is not a healer, she is a mirror you paid for. If the cards show me that the relationship you are asking about is already over in every meaningful sense and you are only asking when it will recover, I will tell you that. I will not tell you that Mercury retrograde is making things difficult and love will return in spring.
On Romani Identity and Spiritual Practice: Without the Romance
I want to say something plainly, because it is said plainly too rarely. Romani spiritual practice is not a brand. It is the lived knowledge of a people who survived centuries of enslavement in the Romanian principalities, Wallachia, Moldavia, deportation, genocide, displacement, and continued marginalisation. The women who carried this knowledge forward did so under conditions that were genuinely brutal. They did not do it to be mysterious. They did it because their communities needed them and because the knowledge was worth preserving.
When someone with no connection to that lineage calls themselves a Roma psychic or sells "Romani-style" readings, they are borrowing the cultural weight without the actual weight. I am not saying this to be territorial. I am saying it because it matters to the quality of what you receive. The authority in a real Romani reading does not come from aesthetics or atmosphere. It comes from knowing, in your bones, what this practice has cost. That knowledge changes how carefully you work.
