Signs Your Loved One Is Trying to Contact You Right Now

People come to me after a death. Not immediately, first comes the numbness, then the arrangements, then the particular exhaustion of grief that settles in the bones like winter damp. It is usually three, four months later that they write to me, asking whether the signs from deceased loved ones they have been noticing are real, or whether they are simply desperate. I will not comfort you about that question. Both can be true at once. Grief makes us attentive in ways we normally are not. That heightened attention is not delusion. It is also how contact is made.

What I am going to tell you here comes from twenty years of work and from a lineage that goes back further than I can trace, Baică healers from the Rhodope border country, women who understood the membrane between the living and the dead as something thin and variable, not fixed. My grandmother did not speak of the dead as gone. She spoke of them as turned away, mostly. Mostly.

Why the Dead Attempt Contact at All

Before listing signs, it is worth understanding the logic. In the folk traditions I was raised in, descântece practice, spoken-word working, the older Romani healing ways, the dead are not immediately at peace or immediately at rest. There is a period of orientation. The person who has died must understand what has happened. This takes time. During this period, they remain close to the people and places they knew. Contact during this window is not unusual. It is almost expected.

After that window, contact becomes less frequent and requires more effort, on both sides. When it happens later, it tends to mean something specific. There is unfinished business. There is something the dead person needs the living person to know. Or there is simply love, which does not extinguish cleanly.

What contact is not: it is not your deceased loved one hovering nearby at all times, watching you. The dead have their own situation to attend to. When they reach through, they are reaching through for a reason.

The Most Reliable Signs from Deceased Loved Ones

Dreams That Are Not Quite Dreams

Ordinary grief dreams are vivid and painful. You see the person, you lose them again, you wake exhausted and bereft. These are your own mind processing loss. They are real and they matter, but they are not contact.

Contact dreams have a different quality. The person is calm. They are not sick, not dying, not the way they were at the end. They say something specific, not reassuring platitudes, but something particular to your shared history. Sometimes they say nothing and simply look at you in a way that carries information. You wake from these dreams feeling different from ordinary grief dreams. Steadier, sometimes. Or shaken in a specific way, as if something has actually happened.

Pay attention to what is said. Write it down immediately. Do not interpret it right away. Let it sit.

Electrical Disturbances

Lights flickering. Bulbs that blow repeatedly in one room. A television or radio that switches on without cause. A phone that shows a missed call from a number that no longer exists.

I am not going to tell you that the dead have mastered electrical engineering. What I will tell you is that these disturbances cluster around people in grief, in particular places, at particular times, often around anniversaries, around significant dates the deceased would have known. The pattern is what matters. One flickering bulb is a bulb. Lights flickering repeatedly in your mother's old room on the anniversary of her death, when every other bulb in the house is fine, is something else.

Scent

This is the sign I take most seriously. The sense of smell bypasses cognitive filtering in ways that vision and hearing do not. When someone reports catching the scent of their dead father's tobacco pipe in a room where no one has smoked, or their grandmother's specific perfume, not a similar scent, but that particular one, in a place it has no reason to be, I listen carefully.

Scent contact tends to be brief. A few seconds. It does not linger the way a real source would. And it is usually the scent of something strongly associated with the person, not a generic flower smell, but their specific soap, their specific cooking, their specific self.

Objects Moving or Appearing

Things found in unexpected places. Objects that belonged to the deceased turning up after being lost. A photograph falling from a shelf at a significant moment. These are common reports and I treat them with some caution, we lose things and find them constantly, and grief makes us alert to coincidence in ways we otherwise are not.

What elevates this from coincidence is specificity and timing. If your brother's watch, which has been missing for two years, appears on the kitchen table the morning you have to make a decision he would have had strong feelings about, that timing is worth noting. I am not telling you what it means. I am telling you it is worth noting.

Animals Behaving Unusually

Older than any of the other signs in the tradition I come from. Cats watching empty corners. Dogs sitting alert at nothing, ears forward, calm rather than alarmed. Birds, particularly robins in the British folk tradition, ravens in the Romani one, appearing repeatedly and without apparent reason, at close range, unafraid.

Animals perceive things we do not. This is not mysticism; it is observable fact. Whether what they are perceiving in these moments is the presence of the dead or some other shift in the environment is a question I cannot answer with certainty. But the association between unusual animal behaviour and the presence of those who have died is old enough that I respect it.

Signs from Deceased Loved Ones That People Often Miss

The signs people miss are usually not dramatic. They are small repetitions. A song that keeps appearing, on the radio, in a shop, hummed by a stranger, that was significant to the person who died. A number that keeps recurring, one that has meaning in your shared history. The sense of a presence in a peripheral way, not frightening, simply there.

People miss these because they are looking for something unambiguous. They want the flickering lights or the voice. The quieter signals are more common. They are also easier to dismiss.

In the descântece tradition, attention itself is part of the work. The spoken charm opens a line of communication because the speaker is fully present and attending. Grief, when it does not collapse into numbness, can function similarly. You are paying a quality of attention you did not pay before. The dead, if they are attempting contact, find that attention easier to reach.

When Signs Indicate Something Unresolved

Most contact is benign. The dead person is orienting, or expressing something simple, that they are not in pain, that they are aware of what is happening with you, that something was left unsaid and they wished it hadn't been.

But some contact indicates something unresolved that needs addressing. I watch for signs that cluster and intensify rather than occurring and then fading. For signs that carry a quality of urgency rather than presence. For contact that seems to be asking something rather than simply expressing something.

In these cases, the living person usually knows it. They feel it as something unfinished rather than something comforting. They are right to feel it that way.

This is also when a medium session serves a purpose that ordinary grief support does not. The work of a medium session, as I practice it, is not to provide comfort by telling you your loved one is fine. It is to facilitate specific communication, to find out what is being asked for, what is unresolved, what the dead person needs the living person to understand or do. That is a different thing. It is practical work.

What These Signs Do Not Mean

I want to be direct about something, because people are sometimes told otherwise.

Receiving signs from your deceased loved one does not mean they are unable to rest. It does not mean they are trapped. It does not mean you have done something wrong or that their death was wrong. In the tradition I come from, the dead and the living maintain connection as a matter of course. That connection is not pathological. It does not need to be severed or resolved.

It also does not mean you are losing your mind. I have spoken with doctors, lawyers, engineers, people with no prior interest in anything outside their material world, who come to me because they have experienced something they cannot explain and need to speak to someone who will not immediately reach for a clinical explanation. Grief does strange things to perception. Some of those strange things are contact. Some are not. Learning to distinguish between them is part of what I do.

If you have questions about what you are experiencing, whether it is contact, what it might mean, what to do with it, a one burning question reading is often the right starting point. You bring me the specific thing that is happening and I will tell you what I see in it. Not what you want to hear. What I see.

For those who believe something more extended is being asked for, a full conversation rather than an interpretation, the medium session is where that work happens. I work by email. You will have my response within three to five days. I do not perform sessions in real time. The work requires my full attention and my full attention requires quiet. You will receive something written, detailed, and specific. If what I find is nothing, if I find no contact, no presence, no clear signal, I will tell you that too.

You can also read more about who I am and where this practice comes from on the Roma psychic practice page, if that context matters to you. For some people it does. They want to know the lineage of the hands they are placing their questions in. That is a reasonable thing to want to know.
