People ask me how to get a better reading. The answer is not more candles. It is not the right moon phase or a cleaner deck or a reader with more years behind her. The answer is the question. If you come to a tarot reading, to any psychic reader worth your money, with a poor question, you will leave with a poor answer. This is not mysticism. It is logic. You are asking me to show you a road. If you cannot tell me which city you are trying to reach, I cannot help you find the turning.
In twenty years of practice I have seen every kind of question. I have watched people waste readings on things they already knew. I have watched people come in so afraid of the answer that they wrapped the question in six layers of indirection until there was no question left. And I have watched people, occasionally, arrive with something precise and real, and those are the readings that do something.
What questions to ask a psychic is not a small matter. Below I have written the 25 that are worth asking, and the 5 that are not.
Why the Question Is the Whole Work
The cards do not speak on their own. Neither do I. What happens in a reading is that something in you, your situation, your history, the weight you are carrying, makes contact with what I see in the cards. The question is the point of contact. Vague question, vague contact. The reading slides off. You get language that sounds like something but means nothing, and you go home with the same uncertainty you came with, lighter only in the wallet.
The Roma tradition I come from, the baică lineage of folk healers from the Rhodope borderlands, has always been practical about this. The descântece, the spoken-word charms my grandmother used, required you to name the thing precisely. You did not say "I am unwell." You named what was wrong. The naming was part of the remedy. The same principle applies here.
So. Here are the questions.
25 Questions Worth Asking a Tarot Reader
On Relationships
1. What is the real dynamic between me and [name], not what I want it to be?
This is the most useful version of any relationship question. The "not what I want it to be" clause is not modesty. It is instruction. It tells me you are prepared to hear something honest.
2. What is blocking genuine intimacy between us?
Not "does he love me." That question has one syllable answers and they are never the point. What blocks intimacy, that is something I can show you.
3. What am I not seeing about this person's intentions?
Good question. It acknowledges your own blind spot, which is where all the useful information lives.
4. What does this relationship need from me right now?
Not what it needs from them. From you. This is the version you have any control over.
5. Is this relationship moving toward something sustainable, or running on fumes?
Specific. Binary enough to give the cards something to land on. Not so binary that you've already decided the answer.
6. What would I have to accept about this person to stay?
An underused question. The cards will show you what is actually there, not what you have been hoping to change.
7. What is keeping me attached when part of me wants to leave?
This one tends to produce uncomfortable answers. That is why it is useful.
On Work and Money
8. What is the real obstacle to my financial situation improving?
Not "will I have more money." That is not a question, that is a wish. The obstacle, that I can find.
9. What am I undervaluing in my professional life right now?
Something specific to look for. The cards respond to specificity.
10. What does the energy around this decision look like, [specific decision]?
Name the actual decision. "Should I quit my job" is more useful than "what about my career."
11. What is working against me in this negotiation / application / opportunity?
Working against you. Not what you hope is working for you. The opposition is where you need light.
12. What do I need to stop doing in my work life?
One of the most productive question structures. Removal, not addition.
On Personal Direction
13. Where am I lying to myself right now?
The bravest question on this list. Most people are not prepared for the answer, which means most people do not ask it. If you ask it, I will tell you what I see.
14. What is the pattern I keep repeating, and what is it protecting me from?
Two parts, both important. The pattern alone is just description. The protection is the mechanism. That is where the work is.
15. What do I need to grieve before I can move forward?
Not often asked. Very often the answer to why someone cannot move forward.
16. What is my greatest source of internal resistance right now?
Resistance, not obstacles. Resistance comes from inside. Obstacles come from outside. They require different responses.
17. What is the next right action, not the whole plan, just the next step?
People come to readings wanting a map of the next decade. Maps of the next decade are useless. The next step is actionable.
18. What am I carrying that is not mine to carry?
This question almost always produces something. Family weight, mostly. Old obligations that calcified into identity.
On Family and the Past
19. What family pattern am I living out without realising it?
The cards see lineage. They see what repeats. This question opens that.
20. What unresolved thing from my past is still shaping my present choices?
Unresolved and still shaping. Both words matter. The unresolved past that has no current influence does not need a reading. The one that is still steering you, that is the concern.
On a Specific Situation
21. What is the likely outcome if I continue on my current path with [situation]?
Future-oriented, but conditional. "If I continue" acknowledges that you have agency. This is important. It makes the reading actionable rather than fated.
22. What am I missing about this situation that someone outside it would see immediately?
The outside view. That is partly what I am here for.
23. What is the most useful thing I could do in the next thirty days regarding [situation]?
Time-bounded, practical, specific. The cards can work with this.
24. What does the other person in this situation need that I have not considered?
People forget to ask this. They are usually so focused on what they need that they have not thought about what the other party's position actually is. Sometimes the answer to that question changes everything.
25. What do I most need to understand right now?
The open question. This one goes at the end, not the beginning. Use it when you have already asked the specific things and you want to know what the cards have that you have not thought to ask about. As an opening question it is too wide. As a closing one it can catch what the others missed.
5 Questions You Should Never Ask a Tarot Reader
These are the ones that produce nothing. Not because they are too dark or too private, I have heard all of that and I do not flinch. Because they are structurally useless. They are not questions at all.
1. "Will I be happy?"
Happiness is not a destination you either reach or do not reach. It is not something the cards can point to on a map. This question gives me nothing to work with because it is not connected to anything specific in your life. Ask what is standing between you and something you want. Ask what you are doing that is working against your own interests. Ask those, and we will have a conversation. "Will I be happy" is a horoscope question. Come to me with something real.
2. "What is [person] thinking about me right now?"
I understand why people ask this. The uncertainty about what someone else is thinking is a genuine source of suffering. But I am not a receiver tuned to other people's private thoughts. What I can show you is the energy of the dynamic, the likely trajectory, what is actually happening in the space between you. That is different from surveillance. Do not come to me wanting surveillance. Come to me wanting clarity.
3. "When will [thing] happen?"
Timing questions are the most commonly asked and the least reliably answered, by any reader, anywhere. The cards show tendency and direction. They do not carry a calendar. I will not invent a date for you because inventing dates is something fraudulent readers do. If timing matters to you, ask instead: what would accelerate this, or what is slowing it down. Those I can answer.
4. "Am I cursed / hexed / under negative spiritual attack?"
I say this carefully because I know what I come from. I have seen real harm done by ill will. The descântece tradition exists precisely because such things were taken seriously. But in my twenty years I have met precisely one person I genuinely believed was carrying something placed on them from outside. What I have met thousands of times is people whose lives were in difficulty and who wanted an external explanation that let them off the hook for their own patterns. If something is wrong, ask me what it is and where it comes from. Do not come with a diagnosis already written.
5. "What does my future look like?"
The whole future. In a single question. This is not a question. It is an abdication. You are asking me to do your thinking for you, to survey the entire landscape of what might happen and hand you a summary. That is not how this works. Nothing useful lives in that kind of width. Narrow it. Pick the area of your life that is most urgent right now. Ask about that. Give me something with edges.
One Last Thing
The reader matters, of course. But in my experience, a good question asked of a mediocre reader will produce more than a bad question asked of an exceptional one. Come prepared. Know what you are actually asking. Do not soften the question because you are afraid of the answer, if you already know the answer and you are just afraid to hear it confirmed, then the reading will confirm it, and at least you will have something to act on.
I do not tell you what you want to hear. I tell you what I see. Whether that is useful depends almost entirely on whether you gave me something real to look at.
